The "Clear the Air!" theme is about the positive outcome that results when a vehicle owner retires his or her older car. It's about recognizing that a car that contributes a disproportionately high amount of pollutants is better scrapped than driven, and that doing so provides an immediate and significant return in terms of cleaner air. When a member of the community participates in the Clear the Air! scrap-an-old-car program, they are keeping their part of a vital social contract.one that promises a cleaner, healthier environment to live in. As a theme Clear the Air! is active and positive and evokes ideas of renewal and of a fresh, clean start.
The "Clear the Air!" project is administered by the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique (AQLPA), an environmental group dedicated to promoting public awareness on air quality issues.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

. "Clear the Air!" above all aims to reduce air pollution

. "Clear the Air!" is a program that enables citizens to rid themselves of their obsolete, highly polluting vehicles and removes the most polluting vehicles from the streets of the Montreal metropolitan area

. "Clear the Air!" aims to interest 2000 vehicle owners to voluntarily retire 2000 vehicles (1995 or older) with compensation

. "Clear the Air!" will reduce smog in the Montreal area

. "Clear the Air!" ensures that all existing environmental norms will be respected during the elimination of these vehicles

. "Clear the Air!" lets people make a charitable contribution as well. Proceeds from the sale of auto bodies scrapped under the project will go to The Kidney Foundation of Canada (Quebec Branch)

. "Clear the Air!" promotes the use of public transportation and alternative means of transportation to the automobile

. "Clear the Air!" is funded by Environment Canada and by contributions from program partners.

INCENTIVES

In addition to receiving a $50 tax receipt from The Kidney Foundation of Canada (Quebec branch), participants can win a trip for two by train to Gaspé or one of several other vacations offered by Via Rail Canada. What's more, the first 500 eligible participants will receive three public transportation monthly transit passes OR a coupon for a free vehicle inspection at Canadian Tire. All participants are entitled to a free membership to the AQLPA for one year.

        . Tax receipt
. Chance to win a trip for two by train

QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE ELIMINATION OF VEHICLES

. Which scrap yards are authorized to participate? Kenny Pièces d'auto of Laval and the Société Nationale de Ferraille, both members of the Association des recycleurs de pièces d'autos et de camions (ARPAC)

. Which parts are eliminated? Auto parts not for re-sale: carbon filters, oxygen sensors, EGR valves, air pumps, catalytic converters, pressure detectors, injectors, cold detectors, spark plugs, wires and mercury switches.

What are the environmental norms in Quebec for the dismantling of auto bodies? The "Clear the Air!" project will apply all environmental norms and procedures recommended by the Quebec environmental department's "Guide des bonnes pratiques pour la gestion des véhicules hors d'usage".
