Why? How to obtain your IDP? Who Needs One?

Why?
Essentially, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your driver's licence into a dozen languages, which makes it very useful indeed when you travel abroad. You won't necessarily be asked for it when you rent a car, although it is required in some countries (inquire with your CAA-Quebec travel counsellor). But it's not hard to imagine how useful it can be if you're pulled over for a traffic violation by a police officer who can't read a word of English… So, as you can see, your IDP helps facilitate communication, especially if you're stopped by the police, and also serves as extra ID. It goes without saying that an IDP can never replace your passport, no more so than it replaces your "real" licence. Think of it as a handy addition.

How to obtain your IDP??
CAA-Quebec is the only authorized issuer of the International Driving Permit in Quebec! To obtain your IDP, you must apply in the country where you obtained your official licence. In other words, you have to get it before you leave. In Quebec, that means at any CAA-Quebec Service Centers or click here to fill out the form , print, sign and send it to the following address:

Montréal (Québec) H3G 2R7 You must include :
2 signed passport photographs
CAN$17 ($15 IDP fee plus $2 postage)
Photocopy of your Canadian driver’s licence
Completed and signed form

Who needs one ?
If you only travel in North America, you can drive easy knowing that your Quebec licence will be recognized wherever you go. However, it's a good idea to get an International Driving Permit if you plan to drive in many other countries. IDP is valid for one year from issuing date.

在这用中国驾照，半年内是可以的。

但用中国驾照申请国际驾照，应该是不行的。

中国拿不到国际驾照.国际驾照单独不能使用,要和你自己的驾照一起,才能生效.又因为中国不是什么国际运输协会(名字不确切,我记不住了)的会员国,所以和持中国驾照是不能办理国际驾照的,即使半出来,也是不能使用的.所以国内为持中国驾照人士,办理国际驾照的所谓代理基本都是骗子.

昨天刚拿了加拿大驾照，高兴之余，就想了解一下这个证能被其它国家认可的程度。

网上逛了半天还是没个所以然，只是知道：

1。 美国完全认可加拿大驾照
2。 国际驾照本身用处不大，但有些地区（如：香港）又认可国际驾照+本国驾照。
3。 国际驾照如果一定要用还必须伴随加拿大驾照一起使用，并且其的签发地得是加拿大才行。

不知以上概诉的准确程度，请大家补充加拿大驾照的国际认可度，能在那些地方使用，谢谢！
