伊朗航空公司655號班機（IR655）是由伊朗航空經營往伊朗阿巴斯港及阿拉伯聯合酋长國迪拜的定期航線。在1988年7月3日，兩伊戰爭將結束之前，655號班機被美國海軍的提康德羅加級飛彈巡洋艦文森尼斯號（USS Vincennes）擊落，290名乘客和機組人員，包括38名非伊朗人，66名兒童，1名孕婦全部罹難。當時文森斯號在伊朗水域內。
美國政府事後解釋這架伊朗客機被誤認為正在執行攻擊的F-14雄貓式戰鬥機。伊朗政府認為文森斯號於完全知情下擊落伊朗客機。

Strangely unmentioned by either Fox or Media Matters was that one time in 1988 when America shot down an Iranian airliner, killing 290 people. Ronald Reagan didn’t do a primetime speech on  that one, of course, because the U.S. doesn’t deliberately shoot down  airliners — we were really sad about the loss of life, but we were also  really sure it was an Iranian F-14 fighter before we fired on it (in  fact, the commander and missile officer on the USS Vincennes got medals for  their excellent performance). Even though the jet’s transponder signal  identified it as a civilian plane. In fact, the U.S. has never formally apologized to Iran for that one, although we did pay out $131.8 million  in a settlement to discontinue a case in the International Court of  Justice. No apology needed there, because it was a war zone, and  mistakes were made.

• Ukrainian military shot down a Russian passenger jet  containing 78 people on 4 October 2001 as it flew over the Black Sea  travelling from Tel Aviv in Israel to Novosibirsk in Russia.  Russian crash investigators concluded the Tu-154 was hit by a Ukrainian  ground-to-air missile despite the fact it was on its flight plan on an  international airway which did not fall under any restrictions imposed  by Ukraine. It exploded in mid-air, sparking speculation it was downed accidentally by Ukranian military on exercises in Crimea.

Cubana de Aviación Flight 455 was a Cuban flight from Barbados to Jamaica that was brought down on October 6, 1976 by a bomb attack. All 78 people on board the Douglas DC-8 aircraft were killed. Two time bombs were used, variously described as dynamite or C-4.
Several CIA-linked anti-Castro Cuban exiles and members of the Venezuelan secret police DISIP were implicated by the evidence. Political complications quickly arose when Cuba accused the US government of being an accomplice to the attack.
