A few prons and cons to start fresh from medical school here in McGill.
prons:
1. much better career choices, almost garentee a residency position after you graduate. The match rate for residency in Canada is 95% for medical school graduates but only 10% to foreign school graduate. Also, you have a chance to compete in specialty like surgery, radiology etc, which is very hard to get into if you are foreign school graduates.
2. no need to take USMLE (although it is possible too) if you want to practice in Canada only.
3. Takes 4 years to complete (just 1-2 years more than preparing for board by your self).
4. you do not have to speak french in your medical school if you want to study in McGill and find a residency outside of Quebec afterwards. You still do need french if you decide to stay in Quebec.
5. a better understanding and knowledge of the system here, which in turn will benifit your residency training.
Cons:
1. you'll need to take MCAT before application. To get into medical school, you'll need a good resume, good GPA, and a descent MCAT score.
2. competition for admission is quite tough (better than ontario, but still medical school is medical school. You'll need to compete with Quebec CEGEP students, undergrad, grad to get into the medical school; which includes an interview).
3. 4 year full time study. Quebec loan and bursary is not bad, tuition for medical school is the lowest across canada. However, it is still 4 years of high tuition and no income.
4. Medical school here is quite tough and busy. Unlike china, in which medical students have no night shifts, & no real clinical duty. A third year medical student here will be asked to have frequent night shifts, take care of patients directly, and worke full time from 7AM to 7PM daily (varies depending on the rotation), plus you'll need to study at your own time. |
